Reason in a subordinate clause

weil

weil introduces a subordinate clause and sends the conjugated verb to the end.

  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
  • Weil der Bus nicht kommt, gehen wir zu Fuß.
Word order

weil + subject + middle field + verb

Known reason

da

da also means “because” and often begins the sentence when the reason is already known or obvious.

  • Da heute Feiertag ist, bleiben die Geschäfte geschlossen.
  • Da du schon hier bist, können wir anfangen.

Two main clauses

denn

denn connects two main clauses, so normal verb position remains unchanged.

  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.
  • Wir gehen zu Fuß, denn der Bus kommt nicht.

Stating the result

deshalb

deshalb states the result rather than the reason. It occupies position one and is followed directly by the verb.

  • Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
  • Der Bus kommt nicht. Deshalb gehen wir zu Fuß.
