Verb in position two
Statements
In a German main clause, the conjugated verb occupies position two. The subject or another complete element can fill position one.
- Ich lerne heute Deutsch.
- Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
- In Berlin wohnen viele Menschen.

Two-part verb forms
The verb bracket
Separable verbs, modal verbs and compound tenses place verb parts around the middle field.
- Ich rufe dich später an.
- Wir müssen heute lange arbeiten.
- Sie hat den Film gesehen.
Verb at the end
Subordinate clauses
Subordinating conjunctions such as dass, weil and wenn place the conjugated verb at the end.
- Ich weiß, dass du heute arbeitest.
- Wir bleiben zu Hause, weil es regnet.
