How separable verbs are formed

A separable verb consists of a stressed prefix and a base verb. The prefix changes or extends the meaning.

Separation in a main clause

The base verb is conjugated in position 2, while the prefix moves to the end.

  • Ich rufe dich morgen an.
  • Mara steht jeden Tag früh auf.
  • Wir kaufen am Samstag ein.

No separation

Separable verbs in subordinate clauses

When the verb is at the end of a subordinate clause, prefix and base verb stay together.

  • Ich weiß, dass Mara jeden Tag früh aufsteht.
  • Wir gehen los, nachdem wir eingekauft haben.
