Building a dass-clause
The subordinate clause begins with dass, is separated by a comma and places the conjugated verb at the end.
Pattern
main clause, dass + middle field + verb.
- Ich weiß, dass du heute arbeitest.
- Sie sagt, dass der Zug später ankommt.
- Wir hoffen, dass ihr die Prüfung bestanden habt.
Was?
As an accusative object
After verbs such as wissen, glauben, sagen, hoffen, hören and sehen, the clause often replaces an accusative object.
- Ich weiß das. → Ich weiß, dass du recht hast.
- Er glaubt das. → Er glaubt, dass der Kurs ausfällt.
Wer oder was?
As a subject
A dass-clause can function as the subject. The main clause often contains placeholder es, which disappears when the subordinate clause comes first.
- Es ist wichtig, dass du pünktlich bist.
- Dass du pünktlich bist, ist wichtig.
darauf, dass …
As a prepositional complement
Before a dass-clause, the preposition is usually represented by a da(r)- form.
- Wir warten darauf, dass der Bus kommt.
- Sie freut sich darüber, dass du mitkommst.
