Verbs that cannot form a personal passive

Not every German verb can be changed into the passive. Meaning and complements determine what is possible.

When is a personal passive impossible?

A personal passive normally starts from an active sentence with an accusative object. Verbs that describe a state, possession or fixed relationship often cannot form one.

Example

Lea hat ein Fahrrad. → Not: Ein Fahrrad wird von Lea gehabt.

Reflexive verbs also normally have no process passive in their reflexive meaning: Ich beeile mich.

Important exception

The impersonal passive

Some active verbs without an accusative object can form an impersonal passive when they describe an intentional activity.

  • Die Gäste tanzen. → Es wird getanzt.
  • Man hilft dem Kind. → Dem Kind wird geholfen.

A dative object remains in the dative.
